Getting a new puppy is an exciting experience that can make your home feel warmer and more joyful. Caring for your new canine companion requires giving them baths, walking them, and taking them to the veterinarian for vaccinations and neutering or spaying. Additionally, you'll need to provide your puppy with pet food to help them grow healthy and strong. Below, you'll find a feeding guide for your new furry friend.

Puppy Food Formula

Young pups have higher energy requirements than mature dogs, which is why they need food specifically formulated for puppies. Their pet food should contain a balanced ratio of meats, vegetables, and whole grains.

Additionally, since puppies need approximately 990 calories per day, their food should have a higher fat and protein content. Puppy foods also usually contain essential vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin A, calcium, and iodine, that support the healthy growth of bones, muscles, and organs.

First-Year Feeding Timeline

During the first six to 12 weeks, feed your puppy small portions of dry food four times daily. Moisten the food if they have trouble chewing it while their teeth continue to develop. At three months of age, keep feeding them dry food in small portions, but decrease feedings to three times daily.

At six months, or after your pup undergoes spaying or neutering surgery, feed them twice daily since canines typically have lower energy requirements starting around this time. As they approach one year of age, gradually introduce adult food into their diet in two half-portions given twice daily.

Portion Sizes

Pet food portions vary depending on the breed, size, and growth rate of your pup. Their body condition can provide you with clues about how much to feed. For instance, if your pup gains too much weight too quickly, start feeding them smaller portions and pick up any remaining food to prevent snacking between meals.

Conversely, increase portion sizes if your pup needs to gain weight. Feed them at specific times per day, and stick to the same daily feeding routine to develop healthy eating habits and ensure proper growth.
