Guitar Lessons: What You Need to Know

Session Times

The length of the lesson schedule varies for each music school, with many running 5–20 weeks. Each private class lasts 30 minutes to an hour, depending on what works best for your schedule and skill level.

Recommended Age

Guitar Columbia MDThe suggested age to start learning traditional guitar is 9. Suzuki Method Guitar Lessons are available at a younger age. The smallest guitars are half the size of a standard guitar, and the student should be able to at least hold and strum a smaller version.

Finger Pain

Pain in the fingertips until you develop calluses is common when learning to play this amazing instrument. Also stretching your hand and arm produces a different sensation. Your music teacher might recommend exercises to strengthen your hand muscles and prevent discomfort.

Basics First

Beginning traditional lessons may concentrate on learning the strings as well as reading and writing tablature. The latter is the way guitarists write standard notations or music. Once you have mastered the basics, reduced or eliminated bad habits and developed good ones, you will progress in your music lessons.

Guitar Type

The variety of guitar you wish to play will affect your willingness to attend lessons and practice regularly. Think about the music that appeals to you; this will make it easier for you and your teacher to decide on a guitar type, such as electric, acoustic, or classical.

Group Lessons

Group music lessons let you learn with other beginners or display what you have learned privately in front of peers. You will learn to perform with others and become friends with people who have the same interests.
