1. Tuning Is Essential

Even the slightest bump can cause your cello to get out of tune. When you transport your instrument to different locations, chances are you may need to tune it regularly. Temperature and humidity also play an important part in keeping your string instrument in tune.  An electric tuner will help you know when you’re out of tune and your teacher will help you to adjust the pegs and fine-tune to the perfect pitch. Your teacher will then show you where to place your fingers on the strings to play in tune.

2. How You Hold Your Bow Makes a Huge Difference

Your bow should remain parallel to the bridge when you play. Your teacher will show you how to keep your bow straight. It's something that all cellists struggle with from time to time. While practice is the best way to improve your bow positioning, work on maintaining a consistent contact point between the bow and the strings is important. 

3. The Right Amount of Rosin Makes a Huge Difference

Using too little rosin causes the bow to slip over the strings and create an uneven sound. Conversely, if you use too much rosin, the bow can get stuck on the strings as you play. It’s recommended that you apply five strokes of rosin before playing, whether you’re practicing or performing.  

4. Set a Goal for Practice Sessions

It is definitely recommended that you practice your instrument as much as possible each day. Setting a schedule keeps you on track and also allows you to set goals for yourself. When practicing, worry less about the time you’re spending and more about the quality of the practice session. Remember, practice makes perfect!
