When you have back pain, the source may be originating from one of the intervertebral discs in your spine. Discs are found in between each of your vertebrae, serving as shock absorbers by keeping the bones from rubbing against each other. They have a tough, fibrous outer layer surrounding a protein-based fluid. Two of the most common sources of back pain are bulging and herniated discs, and although they are similar, read below to discover the differences between them.

A Guide to Bulging and Herniated Discs

Symptoms and causes of bulging discs

As the name implies, a bulging disc is one that bulges outward due to compression from the vertebrae. A good way to think about a bulging disc is to imagine a balloon. When you squeeze one side of the balloon, the other side expands and protrudes, but the air stays in.

Many people experience bulging discs due to aging, but trauma — like a car accident or sports injury — can also cause this painful condition. When a disc bulges, it can place pressure on the surrounding nerves, causing back pain which can worsen over time. That said, some people with bulging discs do not experience back pain; the degree of discomfort depends on the location and size of the bulge.

Symptoms and causes of herniated discs

The primary difference between a bulging disc and a herniated disc is that a herniated disc leaks fluid into the area surrounding the spinal nerves. Also called a slipped or ruptured disc, this condition occurs when the outer layer (the annulous fibrosis) cracks or tears due to compression or trauma, allowing fluids to escape. This fluid causes inflammation around the spinal nerves, potentially leading to severe back pain that can radiate into the extremities.

Like a bulging disc, a herniated disc may not cause any back pain at all, depending on the location and extent of the hernia. However, many people find the pain of a herniated disc excruciating and debilitating.

How a Chiropractor Can Help

Once an intervertebral disc is bulging or herniated, it cannot be restored to its original shape. However, treatment from a chiropractor can provide relief from back pain and help you avoid surgery. An experienced chiropractor can precisely adjust the spine to relieve the pressure on the nerves, providing almost instant pain relief. Realigning your spine can also help reduce inflammation and pain.
