With the longer days and warm sunshine comes the desire to get outside.  As you ponder what flowers and vegetables will work best in your gardens, take some time to ponder what plants will work best in and near your septic system.  As a general guideline, you should stick to shallow rooted plants and avoid trees and deeply rooted shrubs. With some planning and thought, you minimize root interference in your septic system and more importantly your leach field.

A simple lush bed of grass will minimize erosion and typically not interfere with the functioning of the system.  For homeowners that would like more involved landscape, shallow-rooted plants such as flowering annuals and perennials or other short root plantings most often will not interfere with the system as their root system is only a few inches deep.  Trees and shrubbery are generally not recommended as their roots go too deep and may compromise the functionality of the leach field.  Tree roots often cause soil shifting and excessive water absorption.  Often times heavy thick tree roots migrate into the leach field and can completely degrade or interrupt the functioning. Typically, large trees should be kept at least 30 feet from your leach field to avoid root damage.  If you currently have trees or other deep rooted plants in or near the area of your septic system, you may want to think about moving them to another spot in your yard or removing them all together.

Regular checks for root invasion should be done as a preventive measure to ensure your system is functioning at optimal performance and avoid costly repairs.  The trained professionals at Zinks Septic Solutions are here to help ensure your septic system is functioning properly.  If any compromising issues are discovered, Zinks Septic Solutions, LLC are the trusted professionals to turn to for professional and trustworthy septic maintenance and septic installation.
