During the winter, pool owners need to think about how to prevent their equipment and pipes from freezing. This problem can lead to cracks in the pool tile, burst pipes, and other costly damage. Here are some tips to prevent your swimming pool from freezing.

How to Keep Your Swimming Pool From Freezing

1. Winterize Your Pool

If you want to close your pool during winter, take steps to winterize it. Clean it by skimming any debris from the water.

Completely drain the pump, filter, and other above-ground equipment. Blow out all the water in the pipes to prevent them from freezing. Add pool antifreeze to the water and place a winter pool cover over it to insulate the water and keep it warm.

2. Use the Heater

For pools left open, you’re going to need to run the heater more often to keep the water temperature above freezing and the pool tile warm. Approximately 12 hours per day is usually sufficient. Try running it mostly at night, when temperatures are lower than during day hours.

3. Install a Solar Cover

A solar cover traps the warmth of the sun and disperses it into your pool water. It also prevents evaporation, keeping the heat generated by your pool heater in the water.

4. Keep the Pump Running

Run your pool pump 24 hours per day. Moving water is less likely to freeze. Plus, it assists your pool heater by circulating the warm water and maintaining a consistent temperature.

If this puts too much strain on your finances, consider installing a freeze protector. This device detects when temperatures fall close to freezing and automatically turns on the heater and pump.
