Most homeowners don’t think much about their pools during snowstorms. However, snowfall may actually have an impact on your pool maintenance. Generally, covers can withstand moderate amounts of snow and protect your pool tile and plaster, but you may need to step in if there’s a major storm. Here's what you should know.

Can Snow Damage a Cover?

Pool covers are designed to protect your pool tile and plaster from rain and snow, so they can generally withstand this type of weather without damage. In fact, a light layer of snow can actually weigh down the cover so that it stays in place even if there are strong gusts of wind during a blizzard. Additionally, if your pool is filled to an acceptable level—usually to about the midpoint of your skimmer—the frozen water should prevent your cover from getting weighed down too much.

However, if you receive three or more feet of snow, the extra weight may strain the cover. This can cause one or more of the anchors around the edge to snap, or it could pull the sides of an above ground pool in toward the center.

When Should You Clear Snow From the Cover?

It’s usually only worthwhile to clear snow from a cover if you’ve received three or more feet. However, some pool owners may want to clear a bit around the edges after receiving about two feet, especially if there’s more snow in the forecast.

Use a long-handled broom to sweep around the edges, removing just a few inches of snow at a time. Then, work your way toward the center. Alternatively, you could have a cover pump installed; this melts snow when it is submerged to clear away any excess accumulation for you.
