Placing a cover over your swimming pool when not in use will extend the life of your investment. The tarp keeps out corrosive debris that could damage the pool plastering or clog the filtration equipment. During winter, it is natural to wonder whether snow buildup could damage the protective membrane. Here is a closer look at how much snow is too much for the cover to handle and when snow removal is necessary.

Can Too Much Snow Damage a Pool Cover?

Pay attention to how many feet of snow accumulate on the pool cover. If the snow load is under two feet, you don't need to intervene. As long as there is enough water in the pool, the winter cover won't buckle under the weight of snow.

The H2O provides additional support, so make sure the level is three to six inches below the skimmer opening. If two or more feet of snow accumulate on the cover, it's best to take steps to reduce the load.

How Should You Clear Snow?

Although you won't have to shovel when the snow load is under two feet, be prepared for when the snow melts. You could end up with a few inches of water on the cover, which could cause premature wear. To prevent this, use a cover pump to drain the liquid.

When the snow load is two feet, carefully remove at least a foot of it from the pool edge and deck. This will prevent too much water from settling on the cover when the snow melts. To expedite the thawing process, place a heat cable around the power cord of the cover pump. When three feet of snow accumulates on the cover, use a soft bristle brush and plastic shovel to carefully remove it.
