Snow and freezing temperatures are no strangers to New Jersey winters. However, low temperatures can cause a swimming pool to freeze. While this might not seem problematic for those unlikely to use their outdoor pools during the winter, the ice could cause substantial damage, including cracked pool tiles. Here are some winterization tips to prevent your pool from freezing and damaging the pool tiles and other structures.

How to Avoid a Frozen Swimming Pool

1. Run the Filter Pump

If your swimming pool's plumbing freezes from the winter temperatures, water inside the pipes could turn to ice. As the ice forms, it can expand, creating cracks and tears in the line. The best way to avoid this damage and the need for pool repairs in the spring is to run the filter pump for 24 hours each day.

If your pool filter pump has automatic settings, you can adjust them to turn on when outdoor temperatures drop to a certain level. Running the filter pump when temperatures are below freezing keeps heated water constantly moving, making it almost impossible to freeze. If you're concerned about energy consumption, consider installing a variable-speed pump that will function at a lower setting to conserve electricity.

2. Cover Your Pool

Exposure to frigid air, snow, ice, and sleet makes it easier for water to freeze. However, you can shield the pool water from winter temperatures and precipitation and lock in heat by covering the structure.

A solar cover will help the water retain as much heat as possible and prevent heat loss. This option is best for any pool owner who doesn't want to consume excess energy to heat the pool to keep it from icing.

3. Angle Pool Jets Upward

An effective way to prevent your swimming pool from freezing is to adjust the pool jets to have an upward stream. The adjustment won't make the water warm more quickly. However, it keeps warm water near the surface of the water.

Since ice forms on the top of the water and freezes downward, the warm water near the pool's surface ensures warm water constantly flows near the area. If the top of the pool cannot get cold enough to freeze, you won't have to deal with ice in the winter.
