If you have developed enlarged, purple veins on your legs and feet, you aren't alone. Approximately 23% of Americans have varicose veins, according to the American Heart Association. Yet, many people don't know much about the condition, which occurs when blood pressure increases within the veins. Here are a few myths you may have heard about varicose veins.

Common Varicose Vein Misconceptions

1. Only Women Are at Risk

While women are more likely to get varicose veins, men can also be afflicted. In fact, around 45% of men are estimated to develop the condition. Family history plays a major role, so if your parents or grandparents had varicose veins, you are more at risk. Other contributing factors include advanced age, obesity, pregnancy, inactivity, and smoking.

2. Crossing Your Legs Causes Varicose Veins

Since varicose veins are caused by pressure, some people mistakenly believe they can develop from crossing your legs or wearing tight pants. However, external pressure has a minimal effect.

Varicose veins arise from internal pressure because weakened vessel valves no longer pump blood efficiently. Blood pools in the veins, leading to their enlargement. Using leg muscles and alternating between sitting and standing can help ease symptoms, though.

3. They Aren't a Health Problem

Varicose veins are often considered a mere cosmetic issue. It's true that most people consider them unattractive. However, treatment does not only restore the appearance of your legs and feet. Varicose veins can be very painful and uncomfortable. You are also at higher risk of developing chronic venous insufficiency, which can lead to ulcers, muscle spasms, and mobility problems.

4. Surgery Is the Only Treatment

Surgery is one option for varicose veins, but many noninvasive treatments are available now. These procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis and require little or no anesthesia. Some use radiofrequency, lasers, or a special solution to collapse damaged veins.
