A water softener is a special filtration system that removes minerals from so-called "hard" water. This can improve its taste and quality while preserving your plumbing's longevity, lowering the risk of issues like clogged drains. The following guide answers some common questions about this device.

What to Know About Water Softeners

What Is Hard Water?

Hard water is a term referring to water with high concentrations of calcium and magnesium. These minerals bond easily with metals and can form a crusty buildup in pipes and on fixtures. When these particulates are removed, it is referred to as "soft" water.

Why Is Hard Water Bad?

Hard water leaves mineral residue behind, marring plumbing fixtures and increasing the likelihood of clogged drains. It also reduces the life span of appliances like dishwashers and decreases the lathering effect of cleansing agents like soap, shampoo, and laundry detergent. Finally, it can dry out skin, leaving you feeling flaky and itchy after bathing.

Do You Have Hard Water?

You may be able to see evidence of hard water on your plumbing fixtures. Minerals can leave a gritty white or gray residue on your shower head, for example. However, the only surefire way to know how much calcium and magnesium is in your water is to have it professionally tested by bringing a water sample to a certified lab.

How Does a Water Softener System Work?

The system consists of two tanks: one for the softener, the other for brine. Water enters the first tank and percolates through resin beads stored inside. The beads are negatively charged, attracting the positively charged magnesium and calcium and leaching them from the water.

The brine tank is filled with salts. These transfer to the softener tank once the resin beads are at maximum capacity and can no longer effectively attract and cling to the positively charged minerals, recharging them.
