Functional oil heating systems don't produce significant amounts of soot. A byproduct of ignited fuel, soot compromises indoor air quality, resulting in allergic reactions and potentially coating furniture in dust. It can also be a fire hazard. If you've noticed that your furnace has this buildup, here's how to restore its safety and functionality.

Common Causes of Soot Buildup on Furnaces

A furnace produces soot when its spray nozzle becomes clogged or dirty. A clogged nozzle cannot release small drops of oil into the furnace, causing fuel to accumulate on the combustion chamber floor. The next time the oil heating system turns on, unburned oil ignites and causes a puffback reaction that creates excessive amounts of soot.

Puffback can also occur because of a faulty shut-off valve or leaking fuel line. A furnace features a spring-loaded valve that stops oil flow when the unit turns off. If dirt builds up in this valve, oil leaks onto the combustion chamber and causes puffback. Similarly, if the fuel line carrying oil to the furnace leaks, air can enter the burner. When the heating system is idle, air bubbles then expand and force oil onto the combustion chamber floor, creating soot buildup.

What to Do If Your Furnace Has Soot

For safety and efficiency reasons, contact an HVAC professional to inspect and clean the system whenever you notice soot. A technician will clean all affected parts, including the flue vent connector, combustion chamber, spray nozzle, and shut-off valve. They will also adjust the burner and clean the chimney since a clogged chimney contributes to soot production.

Once the equipment is clean, get in the habit of regularly changing the air filter. Maintaining a clean filter improves airflow, helping the furnace run efficiently and possibly produce less soot. Change the filter according to the manufacturer's instructions every 30 to 90 days. If you have pets or family members with allergies, do this every month.
