An important key to your home’s exterior is the condition of your fence. Though a PVC fence is designed to be durable and requires minimal maintenance after installation, you’ll still need to keep the surface clean. For most homeowners, cleaning and maintaining their PVC or vinyl fence is relatively simple as long as they know what to do and when to do it. Here’s a simple guide to keeping your fence clean and looking like new year-round.

Clean Off the Surface Dirt

Even the lightest rainstorm can leave dirt spots on your fence and kick up dust that almost always has a way of collecting along the base of the posts. Luckily, this grime is easy to remove. Grab a garden hose and give the surface a quick rinse. For more stubborn spots, use a spray nozzle to blast away the dirt. If the dirt still won’t come off, fill a bucket with warm water and a few drops of your normal dish detergent. Dish soap is non-abrasive, so you won’t have to worry about accidentally damaging your PVC fence. You’ll only need to clean the panels once the dirt is visible enough to be an annoyance.

Inspect the Fenceposts & Panels

Fenceposts provide the main support for your fence panels. When they get loose, the panels are more likely to be damaged by high PVC Fencewinds, routine landscaping, and even changing temperatures. Every month or so, take a walk around your fence line and check the stability of the support posts and the condition of the panels as you go. If anything looks loose or damaged, contact your fence company to schedule a repair appointment. The sooner the damage is taken care of, the better off your fence will be.

Check the Post Caps

Post caps are a decorative touch that can make your PVC fence look polished and beautiful. However, since they’re the tallest part of the fence, they’re more vulnerable to damage. Use a stepstool to inspect the tops of the caps for cracks, dents, or missing pieces. Then, gently push on the cap to make sure it’s securely fastened. If it’s broken or loose, you may need to get a replacement piece from your fence contractor.
