The ignition system of a car helps start the engine. Turning the key generates voltage from the battery. This charge is then delivered to the spark plugs that ignite the engine's combustion chambers, so it has the necessary power. A failing ignition will often give off some signs that auto repairs are needed. Three of these are discussed in the guide below.

How to Tell If You Need Ignition Repair

1. The Car Won't Start

The most obvious symptom of an ignition issue is when a car won't start or will only do so after multiple attempts. This usually indicates a breakdown in the electrical circuit linking the key mechanism with the battery. Inside this circuit, something—typically corrosion—prevents the free flow of electricity needed to produce energy.

2. The Key Won't Turn

Over time, the ignition components inside the key-slot can become worn or damaged. When you turn the key, the alignment will be off, and the key won't move.

First, make sure the steering wheel isn't just locked. For anti-theft purposes, most modern vehicles have auto-locking steering wheels that also block the ignition. To fix it, simply move the steering wheel back and forth. If that does not solve the problem, take the car to an auto repair shop to have the ignition replaced.

3. The Starter Is Silent

If you're able to turn the key, but the starter doesn't make a sound and the engine doesn't turn over, the ignition may be the culprit. In this situation, the ignition cannot make the electrical connection needed to transfer power from the battery. Alternatively, a silent starter can be a sign of a failing battery.
