If any part of a chainsaw malfunctions, it can increase wear and tear on the other elements and put the handler at risk for injury. As such, it’s important to identify potential issues and correct them as needed. Here’s a closer look at three common culprits to keep an eye out for.

3 Signs Your Chainsaw Needs Repaired

1. Smoke

A puff of dust and wood particles are expected when cutting into a log. However, smoke signals a more serious issues — most likely a dull chain. Overtime, the metal blades on the chain wear down and loose their sharpness, which significantly reduces it’s cutting ability. As a result, the movement ends up creating more friction than momentum and causes overheating, leading to smoke.

In such situations, check that the element is oiled and the tension isn’t too tight. As long as those are qualities are correct, the machine likely needs sharpening. If the chain has become damaged from use while dull, then a replacement may be necessary.

2. Wiggling Chain

When a chain is loose, it will hang down towards the ground, requiring the tension to be tightened. However, when the chain wiggles from side-to-side, it indicates the bar's groove has become too wide to hold it in place. Such a situation prevents smooth cuts, which requires replacing the chainsaw bar.

3. Tilted Blades

The blades on the chain should always be pointed straight out from the bar. Yet, if the teeth become tilted, it may be a sign that the bar is damaged. The repetitive motion of the chain movement can end up wearing down the bar’s groove unevenly. As a result, the chain no longer rests at the correct angle, inhibiting cuts and raising the risk of kickback. To fix the problem, a full bar replacement is necessary.
