Structural steel beams are used in a broad range of applications, from residential construction and handicap railings to industrial manufacturing and truck racks. Their shapes and sizes are as varied as their uses. Here’s what you should know about the five most common types of structural steel beams.

5 Commonly Used Structural Steel Beams

1. I Beams

I beams resemble the letter I when viewed from the front. They consist of two horizontal flanges, which may be broad or tapered. Various sizes of I beams are used in a range of construction applications.

2. H Beams

structuralsteelbeamsH beams resemble the letter H when you look at them head-on. They have long flanges, which are the portion at the top of the T-cross section. They’re typically longer and more substantial than I beams. Their great strength and length benefit skyscrapers and bridges.

3. W Beams

W beams consist of a broad, straight flange. They’re available in H and I formats. These beams are used most often in residential construction because of their weight-saving distribution.

4. S Beams

The American standard beam, also known as the S beam, consists of a rolled section with two parallel, narrow flanges. It can be used in industrial applications as well as machinery and equipment manufacturing.

5. C Beams

C beams, or channel beams, have a C-shaped cross-section. The top and bottom contain sloped inner flanges which appear on one side of the shaft. These beams are not as strong as other types and are generally used in smaller construction applications to support lighter loads.
