After driving for more than a couple of hours, it’s not uncommon to feel both drowsy and distracted. Thankfully, there are several ways to help you stay alert until you reach your destination. From munching on snacks to listening to upbeat music, here are some of the most effective strategies for motorists who find themselves getting tired or zoning out while behind the wheel.

3 Ways to Stay Alert on Long Road Trips

1. Eat Healthy Snacks

High-protein snacks like beef jerky and trail mix will supply a steady stream of energy without the subsequent crash that sugar-laden treats tend to cause. The actual act of eating will also keep you alert, but make sure to opt for items that you can munch on with ease as long as you’re the one behind the wheel.

2. Sip Caffeinated Beverages

Coffee, soda, and energy drinks are a must on longer trips. Make sure to monitor your caffeine consumption over the course of the day, though, as you don’t want to overdo it and experience negative side effects.

The FDA advises healthy Americans to limit their daily caffeine consumption to 400 mg. For reference, a single cup of coffee usually contains between 80 and 100 mg of caffeine. Keep in mind, however, that those who are pregnant or have any preexisting conditions may need to limit their caffeine consumption to considerably less.

3. Turn up the Music

Research indicates that noise levels above 90 decibels can keep you from dozing off. When fueling up, grab a portable phone charger—most gas stations sell them—so you can play your favorite songs without worrying about your phone dying.

Podcasts, on the other hand, are a great way to keep boredom at bay. Avoid choosing one that's so engaging, however, that it keeps you from paying attention to the traffic around you.
