Beer is one of the oldest types of alcoholic drink and is arguably the most popular adult beverage in the United States. Nearly 40% of those polled said they choose a cold brew over any other adult beverage. Today, craft beer is an increasingly important share of the market. If you are unfamiliar with the subject, below is a brief introduction.
What Is Craft Beer?
There is no strict definition of what constitutes a craft beer. However, it is generally produced by a smaller, regional brewery with an eye toward quality and flavor instead of mass-production and low price. It also frequently has a higher alcohol content.
Often brewed in limited quantities using traditional methods, craft beer production takes place throughout the United States. However, some regions, such as the Midwest, Pacific Northwest, and Mountain West, feature strong craft-brewing cultures. This is in part due to the availability of hop varietals, a flavoring and stability agent used by brewers.
What Are the Different Types?
1. Lager
This is effervescent and light in both color and flavor. Most of the common and most familiar brands of mass-produced beer are pilsners, which is a type of lager. Lagers are often fruity, piney, or floral, and are brewed to be refreshing rather than filling. The alcohol content of craft lagers is typically 4% to 5%, which is nearly twice that of less expensive, mass-produced varieties.
2. Stout
Stouts (also called porters) are made with black patent malt, so they are much thicker, darker, and richer beverages than pilsners. They have an astringent flavor and ashy aroma. They are often dark gold or brown, sometimes feature coffee undertones, and have alcohol contents of 7% to 8%.
3. Ale
Ales are perhaps the most common type of craft beer, featuring a bitter flavor, fruity scent, and alcohol content of between 6% and 12% by volume. They are slightly darker than a pilsner because the malt is roasted longer, although "pale ales" use a pale malt that gives them a lighter color and less bitter flavor.
