When you are on long-distance road trips, all the stops to the gas stations can add up quickly and eat into your budget. With a few adjustments to how you drive, though, you can conserve fuel and travel further on a tank of gas. As you prepare for your trip, use this guide to set the best fuel mileage on the journey.

How to Use Less Gas on a Road Trip

1. Pack Smart

The heavier your vehicle, the more fuel it is going to use to get up to and maintain speed. The Department of Energy estimates that for every 100 extra pounds in your vehicle, fuel mileage drops by 1%. Using a car-top carrier for suitcases and other gear can reduce mileage by up to 25% on the highway.

To keep the weight in check, only pack what you need, and consider renting or buying other items when you arrive. Make sure you empty your vehicle of anything you don't need before packing, as well, so you aren't transporting extra weight.

2. Check the Tire Pressure

When you hit the gas station to fuel up before the trip, check the tire pressure. Driving on over or underinflated tires is not only dangerous, but it can also reduce fuel mileage. Check the sticker on the inside of the driver's side door for the correct PSI for each tire and adjust as needed.

3. Avoid Certain Driving Habits

Quickly accelerating and slamming on your brakes to stop puts unnecessary wear and tear on your car and increases the number of gas station stops you'll need to make. Easing on the gas pedal to accelerate and letting off to coast to a stop is easier on the car and the fuel tank. Driving this way can save as much as 40% of your fuel mileage.

If you are stuck in heavy traffic, consider pulling off at a rest area or finding an alternate route to reduce wear and tear and gas usage. Stop at a gas station for snacks, grab a bite at a restaurant, or check out a local attraction while the traffic clears.
