When it comes to filling up your tank at the nearest gas station, knowing which fuel to pick can feel like deciphering a foreign language. Without the proper knowledge of your vehicle's needs and how unleaded or premium gas affects it, it can be a confusing decision. Fuel is a critical component in combustion, which makes gas cars run. The air, fuel, and fire from the spark plug combine to start the ignition. The octane in the gas affects the cars' ability to operate without firing off too soon. Here is a guide to the best gas for your car to help you make the most informed choice.

Premium

gas station

Premium gas is designed for vehicles with aggressive engine performance. This fuel has an octane level between 91 and 93 which prevents preignition or engine knock. However, not every vehicle is designed to use premium gas. It certainly wouldn't cause any harm to the vehicle, just your wallet. Premium levels of octane only benefit high-performance vehicles, allowing them more power and better fuel economy. If you are unsure of which fuel you should use, reference the owner's manual for your vehicle. If it says premium fuel is recommended, you can use your own discretion when you're at the gas station.

Unleaded

Unless you drive a Corvette, Porsche, or a vehicle designed for performance, it's likely unleaded, or regular, gas is perfectly safe for your car. Unleaded fuel can have up to 15 percent ethanol, a renewable organic compound designed to oxygenate the fuel and reduce pollution. Octane levels are between 85 and 87, with mid-grade oil at 89. Using unleaded fuel will not damage your engine. In fact, occasionally using off-brand fuel with similar octane levels as a name-brand fuel isn't anything to worry about either.
