The weather is quickly warming up and the days are getting longer, which means it’s time to dust off your grill and prepare for some summertime cookouts. There’s no better way to enjoy a summer afternoon than by grilling for your family or having friends over for a BBQ. Make sure you’re ready for some outdoor cooking by preparing your propane grill.
How to Prep a Propane Grill for Use
1. Look for Corrosion
You should have had your grill covered to protect it from winter weather, but corrosion can still occur over time. Look the unit over from top to bottom for signs of rust. If any of the parts are rusting, replace them.
2. Inspect Fuel Lines
Damage to the fuel lines can occur as well. Look over the line that runs from the tank to the grill. It needs to be replaced if you see any cracking or fraying. You can use soapy water to locate cracks not visible to the naked eye.
Rub a water and dish soap mixture all around the line and along the connections, then turn on the gas. If you see any bubbles forming, then there’s a leak.
3. Clean the Grill
Clean the grill’s exterior with a damp cloth to remove any spiderwebs, dust, and other grime. Using a wire brush, scrub the flame tamers sitting just above the burner. This removes any debris or grime that’s built up on them.
Clean the portholes below out with a stainless-steel wire brush, scrubbing in an up-and-down motion. Use your wire brush to scrub the grate clean as well, soaking them first in soapy water if needed.
4. Top Off the Tank
Check your propane tank for signs of corrosion or wear. If the tank looks damaged, then it’s time to buy a new one. If it is still in good condition, then take it in to top off the propane.
Keep in mind that propane tank gauges only go up to 80% since you don’ t want to fill it any fuller. This ensures the gas can safely expand when it heats up, without putting too much pressure on the tank.
5. Test the Burners
Test the grill once before you actually cook anything, to ensure your burners are working properly. Turn it on and test the temperature as it warms up and reaches peak temperature.
