You’re standing at the pump at your favorite local gas station, looking at the numbers on those stickers, and wondering — not for the first time — if premium would enhance your car’s performance. Before you sink those extra cents per gallon into your fuel tank, learn the essential differences between premium and regular gas.

Premium

Premium is the highest octane unleaded gas. It exists because some cars and trucks with high-compression engines require it. This type of engine is one where the combination of air and fuel in the cylinders takes place in a much smaller space than regular cars. Premium gas is designed to accommodate this higher pressure.

fuelChances are, your car doesn’t have a high compression engine unless it’s a luxury class or a certain set of SUVs. Check your car’s user manual before putting premium propane in your tank. If your car doesn’t need it, using it won’t enhance the performance or gas mileage.

Regular

Regular gas comes in a few octane options, the most common of which are 87 and 89, depending on your gas station. These numbers refer to the fuel’s ability to resist early ignition, which is when the air and gasoline mixture ignites before the spark plug fires. Fortunately, most modern cars also come with sensors to detect and prevent this.

Most cars on the road today run just fine on regular gas. You’re welcome to try premium if your car doesn’t require it and see if you notice any differences, but the cost-benefit ratio usually doesn’t pan out. You’re better off saving your money, heading into the convenience store, and stocking up on snacks or hot food for your journey.
