Across America, restaurants are bustling with patrons on Saturdays and Sundays during the morning and late afternoon. While everyone there is seeking a good meal, most are particularly eager to look at the brunch menu. The combined breakfast and lunch dishes are some of America's favorites, but people rarely know their origins. If you are curious about where brunch came from, consult the guide below.

How Did Brunch Originate?

You've probably heard three different origin stories for pizza, and it's because many different people and countries want to claim the idea for their own. Brunch is no different. Some folks think that New Yorkers invented brunch because they liked the option for both lunch and breakfast after a long night of partying.

Others claim that it was an English tradition in the Victorian era to have a large meal after hunting pheasant, deer, and boar on the weekends. And the Catholics believe it was born from their post-church Sunday feast. The English origin story seems to be the most widely accepted, but it's never been fully settled.

When Did It Become Popular in America?

Assuming that the English invented brunch, it became popular in America in the 1930s. Silent films were becoming increasingly popular, so actors would embark on press tours to promote their movies. With such long travel schedules, trains were the chosen mode of transportation, and they would allegedly stop in Chicago - the half-way point between New York and California - for a midday meal.

With the rich and famous going from city to city after many late nights of parties and events, they began seeking and requesting their new favorite meal concept everywhere they went. In part, we have them to thank for our beloved weekend indulgence.
