Eggs are such a popular food item they extend beyond breakfast or brunch and can be served throughout the day. That’s due, in large part, to how they’re prepared. There are so many ways to prepare eggs, it’s almost impossible to choose just one. If you need help deciding how to order your eggs when you’re at a restaurant, here are three popular choices to consider.

How Eggs Are Often Cooked

1. Scrambled

Scrambled eggs are made by breaking and mixing the whites and yolks of an egg together. There are different ways to prepare scrambled eggs. Hard scrambled eggs mean the mixture is thoroughly cooked through, almost to the point where the eggs are dry.

Soft scrambled eggs are removed from the pan when they still appear moist. When ordering scrambled eggs at a restaurant, the chef will cook them over medium-high heat for three to five minutes, or until they achieve the desired texture.

2. Fried

breakfastFried eggs are a staple of American breakfast, but there’s almost an art to making them the way you like them. These eggs are cooked in a frying pan so the white and yellow don't mix. There are different ways to order the yolk: sunny-side up, over easy, over medium, and over hard.

Sunny-side up is made by not flipping the egg, which leaves the yolk extremely runny. Over easy also achieves runny yolk, but the egg is flipped. Over medium gives you a runny yolk, but the white part of the egg is cooked longer, making the white thicker. Over hard means both the white and yolk are cooked well-done.

3. Omelets

If you like the taste and texture of scrambled eggs, but feel like something is missing, try ordering an omelet instead. Omelets are eggs cooked similarly to scrambled eggs, but the egg is topped with ingredients such as cheese, meats, and vegetables, folded, and cooked until done.
