Fire pits are functional and attractive additions to any outdoor space. From offering warmth on cool nights to providing the perfect spot for roasting marshmallows, there are plenty of ways these features bring enjoyment to your property. Whether you’ve recently added one to your landscape or you’re just considering it, here’s what you should know about fire pit maintenance.

A Guide to Fire Pit Maintenance

1. Clear Out the Ashes

Eradicating ashes is an important process for allowing the fire pit to produce quality flames and stay looking its best. Because ashes can take several days to stop smoldering entirely, be careful when removing them to avoid any burns during the process.

Use leather gloves and a trowel to extract the ashes. Then, place them in a heat-proof container that won’t melt, such as a metal can. If there are twigs and other debris, remove those as well, either by hand or with an indoor/outdoor vacuum.

2. Clean the Pit

Prevent soot from wearing away at the fire pit’s surface with simple, routine cleanings. If you’re working with a metal surface, use a dry scrub brush to slough away debris. Then, mix together a mild soap and water, scrubbing it against the surface with a bristle brush. Rinse well when you’re done. Follow the same approach with masonry surfaces such as stone, but use a hose with a powerful nozzle to help rinse away grime.

3. Cover It

After giving it a thorough cleaning, you’ll want to prevent debris, water, and dirt from entering the fire pit. A damp water pit can take a while to dry, which can hinder upcoming plans for burning a fire. Cover it when it's not in use with a vinyl cover. While it’s possible to make DIY covers with wood or other materials, it’s better to purchase a vinyl cover with a vent feature to allow any trapped moisture to be released.
