Fire pits have become a staple of backyard landscape design. Whether you add one to warm up chilly evenings or just add some ambiance to your gatherings, they create a natural focal point that brings people together. Generally speaking, most are low maintenance, but to continue safely enjoying crackling fires in your backyard, keep the following cleaning and care tips in mind.

How to Take Care of a Backyard Fire Pit

1. Remove Ashes

Ashes from burned wood are acidic, and leaving them in the fire pit can contribute to premature deterioration. After each fire, carefully remove the ashes and place them in a metal bucket. Douse the ashes with water once they are in the bucket, as the embers can continue smoldering long after the fire burns out. The ashes can be put in the garbage or used to amend garden soil if the pH is too low.

2. Clean the Pit

Masonry fire pits should be cleaned regularly. The more often you use it, the more frequently it needs to be cleaned to remove residue. Clean it at least twice a year. The best way to clean a stone fire pit is to scrub it with a mixture of nine parts water and one part muriatic acid. Once it's completely cold and the ashes are removed, wet the stones with water and scrub away creosote with the solution and a stiff crush. Rinse completely, and let the stone dry for 48-72 hours before using the fire pit.

3. Prune Nearby Vegetation

Trees, shrubs, and other plants need to be kept cut back to keep ashes and sparks from igniting a fire. Maintain at least a ten-foot clearance around the fire pit, and trim branches or other vegetation that hangs over the flames. If you plan to use your fire pit in the fall, take care to remove any dry leaves or yard debris from the fire area.

4. Fix Cracks

If you have a masonry fire pit, check it for cracks regularly. The extreme heat from fires can stress the bricks and concrete, causing cracks. Many surface cracks are just cosmetic, but deep or wide cracks should be patched. Future fires will cause more extensive damage or even cause the flames to escape the pit and spread.

5. Apply Sealant

Applying a stone sealant to the fire pit can help prevent stains and make cleaning easier. Choose a sealant that can withstand high temperatures, and apply a thin coat. Let it dry before using the pit.
