Your check engine light is a dashboard alert system that notifies you if there’s an issue with your car’s power system. It is usually orange, yellow, or red and may say “check” or have the outline of an engine. It can indicate numerous issues, some easy to fix and others requiring professional auto repair. Here’s what you should know if you get this alert.

What a Check Engine Light Means

Engines have an electronic control module that monitors activity and senses when something is wrong. This can happen due to simple issues like a loose gas cap, which causes a pressure decrease in the gas tank. However, it can also occur due to a misfire, faulty ignition system, or catalytic converter issues.

The light means you should seek auto repair services right away because you cannot be sure of the cause until your car’s diagnostic system is checked. Some of these issues may lead to decreased performance, heightened emissions, or excess wear on your powertrain if not checked right away.

What to Do If the Light Is On

If your check engine light stays on once the vehicle has started, check the gas cap and tighten it if necessary. If that doesn’t solve the issue, contact an auto repair shop to check your engine. You can still usually drive the vehicle for a short period.

However, if the light is flashing or has turned red or orange when it's usually yellow, that indicates a more urgent issue. Noticeable performance issues or smoke from your exhaust also indicate serious problems, such as an engine misfire or broken catalytic converter, requiring immediate auto repair. These problems may cause increased emissions or engine malfunction, so head straight to the repair shop or have your vehicle towed.
