Alaska's harsh winter conditions make snow tires an absolute must for your vehicle. However, it can be challenging to ensure you're getting the appropriate automotive tires for driving during the colder months. By focusing on the following elements, you can find wheels that will deliver safe and reliable performance in the winter.

How to Choose Winter Automotive Tires

1. Look for the Right Markings

The symbols on a tire's sidewall will tell you whether it can hold up to winter weather, but many people often confuse which ones indicate better snow performance.

All-season options sometimes have "M + S" markings indicating they can perform better in mud and snow than others. However, they don't provide enough traction and control for Alaska's climate. Instead, drivers should look for a three-point mountain with a snowflake symbol inside it—an indicator that the tires have been tested and rated for tougher winter weather.

2. Decide Between Studded & Studless Options

Both studded and studless snow tires can work well for your needs, but the right one depends on the type of winter driving you experience most often. Studless products have deeper grooves allowing them to gain traction by cutting through slush and lightly packed snow.

In contrast, studded options, which use small metal spikes to maximize traction, perform better with ice and heavily packed snow. However, keep in mind that Alaska prohibits using these tires between late spring and early fall.

3. Purchase Winter Rims

Once the colder climate passes, you'll have to switch out your automotive tires to suit the warmer weather. If you only have one set of rims for both winter and summer wheels, you'll have to have them remounted twice a year. You can eliminate this process by looking for another batch for your snow tires. This makes the transition between seasons easier, minimizing wear and tear while making future changes faster and more cost-efficient.
