Taking the proper steps to care for a vehicle will improve its safety while maximizing its life span. However, handling auto maintenance can seem overwhelming and intimidating to new and young drivers. If you aren’t sure how to care for a car, use the guide below to help you winterize it.

How to Prepare Your Vehicle for Cold Weather

1. Check the Coolant Levels

Coolant prevents the engine from freezing in low temperatures. Although the instructions for checking the coolant levels are in the owner’s manual, you can have an auto repair shop take a look if you don’t feel comfortable doing it yourself. If the reservoir is low, the mechanics will top it off.

2. Inflate the Tires

Monitor the pressure regularly using a handheld gauge, which can be purchased at any auto supply store. If they’re under-inflated, use an air pump at a gas station. If you don’t know the vehicle’s recommended tire pressure, check the sticker inside the driver’s door, owner’s manual, and tire sidewall.

3. Use a De-Icer

This fluid will keep moisture from freezing in the fuel line. Use a full bottle of de-icer once a month when temperatures drop below freezing. If you don’t mind frequent fill-ups, keeping the gas tank filled above the halfway line will help prevent moisture from forming altogether.

4. Update the Emergency Kit

Cold weather brings unique driving conditions, so upgrade your car’s existing emergency kit. In addition to the basic essentials, make sure the kit includes tire chains, sand or kitty litter for traction, an ice scraper, winter gloves, and blankets.
