A wrought iron gate and fence adds charming character and old-world appeal to any property. And while they are constructed of durable materials, some routine upkeep will ensure they look and function well for years to come. Here are a few maintenance tips for caring for wrought iron.

Wrought Iron Gate and Fence Care Tips

1. Clean as Needed

There's no exact timetable for how often wrought iron should be cleaned. Get in the habit of checking on it from time to time and cleaning as necessary. No special cleaning products are required; soap and warm water will work just fine. Scrub the surface with a nylon scrub brush, and you can get into tight spots and corners with an old toothbrush. Rinse the gate and fence thoroughly after scrubbing and leave it to dry in the sun.

2. Remove Rust

Rust can spread quickly and degrade your wrought iron gate or fence. Light rust can often be removed during the cleaning process, but for more stubborn patches, you'll need a stiff-wired brush or sandpaper.

Using a bit of elbow grease, remove the rusted portions until as much as possible has flaked off.

3. Protect the Surface

Once all rust has been removed, minimize the risk of further corrosion by sealing the surface. You can apply a water repelling sealant designed for wrought iron, but, in a pinch, a standard car wax will do the trick.

Also, be mindful of the vegetation growing on and around your wrought iron. Keep sharp, rough, or thorny vines and climbing plants away from the surface, and trim back overhanging trees to prevent scratches and other damage in the event of a downed limb.
