If you have missing teeth, dentures are an easy and cost-effective way to replace them, restore chewing and speaking comfort, and improve the appearance of your smile. They come in two main types—full and partial. To help you identify which option is right for your oral health needs, here is what you need to know about each type and the differences between them.
Full
Full dentures are a removable replacement for total tooth loss. They contain a thin, natural-colored acrylic base that sits on your gum tissue, with acrylic or porcelain teeth attached to the base. This creates a full set of artificial teeth that fits comfortably in the mouth.
They are available in immediate or conventional varieties. With the immediate variety, the set is made beforehand and can be used right away after the teeth have been removed. Bear in mind that your gums and bones can shift over time, so you may need to have immediate varieties adjusted more often than conventional ones.
Conventional varieties are made after the teeth have been removed. Once the gum tissue has fully healed, which can take anywhere from eight to 12 weeks, you can start wearing conventional dentures.
Partial
Partial dentures are designed to replace fewer missing teeth than full dentures. Like a full set, a partial consists of a removable, gum-colored base made of acrylic, with artificial teeth attached to it. It may or may not be accompanied by a metal frame or fasteners to hold the plate in place. Any metal parts are coated with acrylic, in the same color as the gums, to create a more natural look.
This option is ideal if you have one or more natural teeth left in your upper or lower jaw. The artificial teeth are strategically placed on the base to fill in gaps, create a more uniform smile, and restore full functionality of the mouth.
