Your vehicle's tires play a vital role in providing reliable, safe, and smooth driving. When they are not in top shape, navigating on roads becomes unpredictable and dangerous. One common malady seen by auto mechanics is tire dry rot. As tires start to naturally degrade, the resin that keeps the rubber from drying out can start to wear out. Here is what you need to know about the condition and how to prevent it from occurring.

What Are the Signs?

Cracks will start to form in the tire rubber; depending on the dry rot's severity, the fissures can be small or large. When you touch the rubber, you'll also notice very brittle or rigid sensations. Unusual discoloration is another clear sign.

The condition can also affect your driving. Dry rot on the rear tires may cause the entire vehicle to vibrate or wobble. On the front tires, the steering wheel may move uncontrollably at low speeds. In both scenarios, the tire tread has started to break away from the tire.

What Are the Causes?

The most common cause of tire dry rot is inactivity; if a vehicle has been parked in a spot for an extended time period, the tires may start to dry out due to a lack of movement. Tires contain resins that are made to protect the rubber from aging and drying. These resins are most active when the tires are in active motion.

Another culprit is consistent exposure to fluctuating outdoor temperatures, especially direct sunlight. Extremely hot weather can cause tire rubber to become dry, brittle, form cracks, and cause the tread to separate.

How Can You Prevent Damage?

If you have access to a garage, always use the enclosure to protect tires from extreme hot and cold weather. As previously mentioned, extreme temperatures can speed up the aging process in tires. A weather-proof car cover is another option if a garage is not available.

Always ensure your tires have the proper amount of air pressure.  Underinflation can cause the rubber to collapse, creases in the tire's sidewall, and lead to dry rot. Avoid allowing your vehicle to sit for weeks or other extended periods.

There are also tire sealants on the market that can help create a barrier against harsh ultraviolet (UV) rays. Finally, purchasing high-quality tires with strong tread wear and speed ratings will aid in safeguarding the rubber from dry rot.
