If you’re constantly filling up your car with gas, you know how expensive driving can be. Those trips to the gas station can be even more painful for your wallet if your vehicle isn’t especially fuel-efficient. Even if you don’t have the option of switching to a more economical vehicle, there are still options for making your existing car more efficient. From changing your tires to the way you drive, here are some changes you can make to pay less at the pump.

3 Ways to Make Your Vehicle More Fuel-Efficient

1. Drive at Moderate Speeds

Your vehicle drives most efficiently when you maintain a steady speed and avoid flooring the gas pedal. You can’t always control the flow of traffic, but when possible, try to stick to the speed limit. Avoid stopping and starting as much as possible. One way to achieve this on the freeway is by using cruise control.

2. Get New Tires

tiresIf your tires are old and worn, they can’t provide the proper resistance to keep your car rolling along the road as efficiently as possible. By switching to new tires with a sufficient amount of tread, you can increase the resistance between the tires and the road, making movement easier. If your tires are fairly new, make sure they’re inflated to the manufacturer’s recommendations as well.

3. Reduce Your Car’s Weight

The more weight your car has, the harder your engine has to work to move it. That means it needs even more gas whenever you drive around with heavy equipment attached to your vehicle. You can’t reduce the weight of your actual car, but you can take out unnecessary items from your trunk or backseat. You can also take off roof racks or other exterior elements to reduce weight and reduce drag on the outside of the car.
