When you operate your vehicle on the road, you rely on your tires to get you where you need to go safely and efficiently. Unfortunately, like any other vehicle component, tires will wear out over time, and you should know the signs of trouble. Below are three symptoms of failing tires, so you can seek replacements early and avoid breakdowns.

3 Ways to Tell If You Need New Tires

1. Low Tread

Over time, the tread, or raised bumps on tires, will start to wear away. Tread serves the important function of allowing water to channel through the voids on the tread, giving the tire the chance to grip the road properly. When the tread wears away, your car can slide across moisture on the road, compromising your handling and safety.

To test the height of your tread, use the penny test. Taking a penny, position Lincoln’s head down, and insert it between the treads. If you can’t see Lincoln’s head, you still have enough tread left, which means your car is still safe to drive. If his head disappears, your tires don’t have enough tread to properly handle the road and adverse weather conditions, and you should replace them immediately.

2. Sidewall Cracks

tiresOver time, rubber loses its flexibility, leading to cracking. These cracks can be incredibly dangerous, because they could result in emergency tire failure as soon as the crack penetrates through the sidewall, causing pressure loss. Sidewall cracks can form when tires are too old, so know the age of your tires. On average, regularly used tires should be inspected at six years and replaced at ten years.

3. Driving Vibration

Tires need to be properly aligned with one another to keep your car driving safely. When tires are bent or pushed out of alignment, it could create wobbling as you drive, which can result in uneven wear. Anytime you notice a wobble when you drive on the street, have your tires and alignment checked.
