There’s plenty of time for learning math in kindergarten and beyond, but familiarizing toddlers with some basic concepts ahead of time can set them up for success. You may be surprised to discover just how many opportunities there are to integrate math into everyday interactions with your little one. Here are a few examples to get you started.

How to Introduce Basic Math to Your Toddler

1. Count Out Loud

As you play with your toddler, count out loud. Even if they might not be able to recite numbers for some time, they’re still learning about one of the most basic concepts in math: the numerical sequence. While you can always count as you’re playing with objects like blocks or stacking cups, try to find other opportunities to recite numbers, too.

For example, you can count the steps it takes to get to the car or how many birds you see on a walk. As they begin to recognize the values that accompany each number, start asking them to make piles of three blocks or do similar exercises to practice counting.

2. Sort Objects

Understanding patterns and relationships will help your little one grasp more advanced concepts later, such as doing equations. Your child likely has toys that can be used to fulfill this purpose, such as blocks of different colors and shapes.

You can also try sorting activities in the kitchen, such as having them sort different-colored grapes or beans. Additionally, help them visualize patterns by encouraging them to lay objects out in a specific pattern, such as rows featuring the same color.

3. Use Comparisons

By learning simple comparisons like smaller and bigger or shorter and taller now, your child will be better equipped to recognize numerical comparisons later, such as which number represents more or less. There are always opportunities to recognize comparisons both inside and outside the house. For example, you can ask them which tree is taller, which vegetable is smaller, and so forth.
