As soon as your young child is capable of understanding basic concepts, you should review fire safety measures. A fire can strike at any time and at any place, so kids need to know how to prevent emergencies and protect themselves. Here are a few tips to share with your preschool child regarding fire safety.

3 Fire Safety Tips for Kids

1. Talk About Fire Prevention

Young children are naturally curious about everything around them. Therefore, they'll often try to touch hot stoves, appliances, open flames, and other risky items. Explain to kids that these items can be dangerous and that they should never touch them. Use books, pictures, songs, or other educational aids to teach kids in terms that they can understand. You can also explain how a small flame can lead to a big fire and how flames and hot tools should never be treated like toys.

2. Safeguard Your Home

Parents should keep all hot or smoking items far away from preschool children. Make sure they can't access lighters, matches, heaters, or other fire hazards in your home. You should also verify that stoves are off and move stools far away from any kitchen appliances so that young kids can't easily reach them.

3. Create an Emergency Plan

Every family needs an emergency plan. To develop yours, identify two exits in every room. You should also designate an outdoor meeting spot for the family and emphasize how important it is to get out of the house and stay out if your kids see fire or smell smoke. Point out the fire alarms in your home and show your kids the sound that the alarms will make if they go off. Older kids should also know how to call 911 and be prepared to provide first responders with the information needed to get to the house. Once you have a plan in place, hold a fire drill a couple of times per year to make sure everyone is comfortable with the plan.
