Childhood obesity is a major public health challenge in the United States, affecting one out of five children, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Being overweight puts kids at a greater risk of developing serious medical conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease. For this reason, it’s important that parents and child care providers take initiative to help prevent obesity. Here are a few tips and strategies that have proven to be effective.

How to Lower the Risk of Obesity in Children

1. Set an Example With Meals

Kids look to their parents and child care providers to be role models, so it’s vital they set an example with healthy eating. Whether at home or in a preschool setting, children should always have access to nutritious meals and snacks. This means offering more vegetables, fruits, lean meats, and whole grains while limiting sugar, processed foods, and unhealthy fats. Parents can also help demonstrate good food habits by including kids in the grocery shopping and cooking, eating meals as a family, and serving sensible portion sizes.

2. Encourage Physical Activity

In today’s digital world, many kids prefer to spend time watching TV or playing video games over going outside to play. This is a significant contributing factor to childhood obesity. Parents can end this trend by restricting screen time and making physical activity a daily practice. Plan fun outings, such as bike rides and nature walks, start impromptu dance parties, or go to a neighborhood park. It’s recommended that kids get at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day.

3. Emphasize Good Sleep Habits

A good night’s rest is just as important to a child’s health as what they eat. When kids don’t get enough sleep, there’s a shift in hormones, which can make them feel hungrier. Additionally, they aren’t likely to be motivated to exercise if they’re tired. Depending on their age, children need eight to 14 hours of sleep a day. To help them achieve this, parents should make sure to have a set naptime and bedtime with a pre-sleep routine that allows their kids to wind down and prepare for quality rest.
