As a doting parent, you might wonder when giving your toddler chores is best. Chores are part of early childhood learning because it helps them feel like they're contributing to their family's daily life. They also learn how to take care of their environment under adult supervision. If you're considering giving your young child tasks to complete at home to aid in early childhood learning, here are some age-appropriate jobs to delegate to them.

What Are Some Age-Appropriate Chores for Your Toddler?

1. Put Toys Away

early childhood learning

Putting toys away is one of the simplest yet impactful chores to give a toddler. It's easy for a space to become full of toys quickly, which could leave the room looking untidy. When it's time for your child to stop playing and put things away, allow them to help you by giving them specific instructions. For instance, you can instruct them to put their blocks in their toy box or stack their books on a nearby table. Once they complete the task, give them another one. Give them time to finish everything and praise the behaviors you want to see.

2. Water Plants

Plant watering is a chore you can complete outside if your yard has a flower bed or potted plants. You can give your little one a small watering can that doesn't hold much water, making it easier for them to carry. The can should be enough for them to water a single plant or flower pot. With this chore, you are teaching your child how to care for another living organism. It also gives you and your toddler a chance to spend time outdoors together as you care for the landscape.

3. Dusting

Dusting regularly is a great way to reduce dust around your house. It's also a simple task that your child can participate in each week. As you dust taller surfaces like tables and countertops, give your child a damp or microfiber cloth and show them how to wipe down lower surfaces. For instance, you could task your toddler with dusting baseboards, table legs, or low-lying shelves. Make the job more interesting by allowing them to dust with a clean sock instead of a regular cloth.
