Winterization is essential for protecting your sprinkler system from the damage that comes with Nebraska's harsh winters. Failing to do this can result in frozen and burst irrigation pipes and cracked or broken sprinkler heads. Here are the three general steps to winterizing sprinklers.
3 Steps to Winterizing a Sprinkler System
1. Turn Off the Water and Timer
The first step is to cut off the flow of water to your system. This is done by shutting off the sprinkler's main water valve, typically located near your water meter. Many systems have backflow preventers that also need to be turned off.
You'll likely find two of them leading to the backflow unit, and both must be fully closed. Once this is done, turn off the timer. This usually involves a simple turn of the dial or knob on the controller, moving it to the off position.
2. Drain the Lines
You want to get all the water out of the irrigation lines so there is nothing left behind to potentially freeze and burst the pipes. Start by wearing safety goggles to protect your eyes from forceful sprays of water. Some sprinkler systems require you to drain them manually; look for shutoff valves at the ends of the pipes or at their lowermost points, open them and fully drain the water, then reclose them.
Other systems have automatic draining capabilities, but you usually have to run one of the sprinkler heads first to relieve pressure before activating the auto-drain function. Another option is to blow the water out with compressed air; because of the risk of potential damage, this should only be done by a sprinkler maintenance professional.
3. Insulate Exposed Parts
After the lines have been emptied, it's time to protect the aboveground components of the system from winter weather. Wrap insulation tape or foam around the main shutoff valve, backflow preventers, and exposed piping, being careful not to block off any air vents or drains.
By following these steps, you will ensure your sprinkler system will weather the winter ahead, and Metro Sod & Seeding can help.
