As the weather gets hotter, it's a sure sign that mosquito season is nearly here. However, although they may seem plentiful in the air, there are many things you can do in terms of lawn maintenance to prevent them from loitering around in your backyard. The key is to avoid too much stagnant water from forming. Pools of stagnant water are where they lay their eggs, so if you can avoid this, you can minimize their presence. Here's what to do.

Anti-Mosquito Lawn Maintenance Tips

1. Mow, Trim, and Fertilize Your Lawn

When your lawn is spotty and patchy, it makes it easier for water to accumulate in those areas. Both sparse and thick areas of vegetation can make it difficult for any water to fully absorb into the ground, so try to make it as evenly as possible.

Regularly mowing and trimming your lawn will help as it keeps the blades a manageable length. Furthermore, it gives you an opportunity to remove any areas of yard debris, which can also retain excess water.

2. Fix Sprinkler Issues

A properly working sprinkler system is a critical part of proper lawn maintenance. If you notice any puddles around the sprinkler heads, make sure to have them checked in case they're damaged.

Additionally, even if the equipment is fine, it's worthwhile to check the watering schedule. You may need to have it adjusted if you notice your lawn is being overwatered.

3. Clear Gutters

Another culprit of stagnant water is the gutters. If you've encountered significant rainfall this past spring, make sure to have them cleaned of any excess leaves ASAP. Afterward, consider getting gutter guards installed. These are perforated screens that prevent leaves and yard debris from collecting in the gutters. The clearer the gutter, the easier any water will drain out.
