Toddlers in child care learn a variety of important life skills. At a certain point, they’ll have to make the switch from diapers to using the toilet on their own. Some children are resistant to the change, while others will welcome the transition. Here is how parents can help ease the training process.

How to Potty Train Your Toddler

1. Opt for the Right Potty

The potty itself can determine how receptive your child is to training, so it’s important to find the right kind. Consider getting a potty seat that sits on top of the toilet to get them used to the height and feeling, along with a step stool for easy access. A standalone potty is a good starting point if your toddler is afraid of using the toilet.

2. Make Time for Adjustment

If you’re using a potty seat on the toilet, flush the handle to get them used to the sound. Some kids are afraid of the noise, so you’ll need to show them that there is nothing to fear.

3. Always Be Prepared

Accidents are bound to happen. It’s a normal part of the process, and child care professionals warn that punishment could make your child resistant to training. Just be prepared for a quick cleanup and encourage your child to keep trying. Bring an extra outfit and underwear whenever your family goes out.

4. Create a Schedule

Scheduling potty time will help your child adjust to the routine and turn it into a habit. First thing in the morning, after meals, before bed, and before leaving the house, have them sit on the potty whether they express the need to go or not. Even if they don’t end up going, instruct them to pull up their pants, flush, and wash their hands afterward.

5. Be Patient & Offer Praise

Remember that potty training can take weeks, and there may be setbacks. Remain patient and continue praising your child for using the potty correctly and cleaning up afterward. Start a rewards system, where each successful use earns a check or sticker. With enough marks, let your child pick out a small toy or new book for you to read together.
