Fall is normally when homeowners shut down their air conditioner for the year and fire up their furnace when the cooler weather arrives. This shift may seem as simple as flipping a switch on the thermostat. However, some homeowners make mistakes that lead to less efficient heating throughout the colder months. Consult the guide below to avoid making common HVAC mistakes this fall.

What Not to Do When Operating the HVAC System This Fall

1. Blocking the Furnace & Vents

furnace

Your furnace needs air to run through its fan system and heat exchanger. This keeps the fan blowing, so it efficiently distributes air through the ductwork. It also prevents the exhaust from being blocked. This part directs carbon monoxide outside, so keeping it open is essential for safety.

To keep it running as efficiently as possible, clear boxes or any items stored around the furnace over the summer, and open all vents and air returns.

2. Leaving the Dehumidifier On

A dehumidifier removes moisture from the air over the summer, which can limit mold growth in the home and make it more comfortable. However, cool fall air has less moisture, so keeping the dehumidifier on may make the indoors too dry. When the cooler weather arrives, switch to a humidifier to avoid dry skin and eye and sinus irritation.

3. Keeping the Same Thermostat Settings

During the summer, you can stay comfortable with a thermostat setting between 75 and 78 degrees by wearing light clothing and running fans. However, the furnace will run more than necessary during fall if you leave this setting. Drop it to between 68 and 70 degrees and wear sweaters for a more energy-efficient option. Doing so will help reduce energy bills and preserve the heating appliance all season long.

A seasonal tuneup is recommended before turning on the furnace for optimal efficiency.
