The condition of your windows greatly affects the energy efficiency and privacy of your home. When they no longer open and close as they should, develop noticeable drafts, or let in sounds or moisture too easily, consider getting new ones to save yourself money on heating and cooling bills. Here are some of the most popular glass options to consider for replacements.

What Types of Window Glass Are Available to You?

1. Tempered

Tempered panes are made from annealed glassglass that is cooled slowly to alleviate internal stress to make the fixtures stronger. The glass is then chemically and thermally treated to increase its strength further. The toughened panels are durable and heat-resistant, which is why they are often used for skylights and first-floor windows.

2. Insulated

Heat gain and loss from inefficient windows account for 25 percent to 30 percent of energy use in the home. Therefore, replacing single- or double-pane fixtures with insulated glass panes could save you $126 to $465 a year in energy costs. These models include two or three laminated or tempered glass sheets with argon gas between the panels to prevent heat transfer.

3. Tinted

To create tinted panels, inorganic additives are used to change the chemical makeup of the glass during the manufacturing process. Colored coatings can be added to the finished product, too. The darker panes can make it hard to see inside the house for added privacy. The tint can also keep UV rays from seeping inside and fading drapes, furniture, and flooring. During warmer days, tinted panels can keep heat outside to make the house cooler.
