When it comes to sewage and septic systems, there are two options to choose from for both residences and commercial buildings. Deciding between the two can be easy depending on what you need but knowing the differences will help make the choice less daunting. Here are some basic facts about standard and aerobic septic systems and what set them apart.

Standard

A standard septic system is what is primarily used in both homes and businesses in the United States. The main aspect that sets this unit apart is the fact that it does not have oxygen in the tank. The proper term for this is anaerobic, and these systems hold waste, both in solid and liquid forms, beneath the ground in the tank.

The heavier matter sinks to the base, and the liquid remains at the top, where a layer of "scum" collects. Wastewater, which is made up of the remaining liquids, is then pushed through pipes that sit beneath the home or building's surrounding soil and is distributed into it from smaller holes in the piping. Conventional systems are less expensive, but they normally do not come equipped with alarms to alert home or business owners about issues that arise.

Aerobic

Septic System

This septic system has three functioning tanks that treat waste, making it a slightly more intricate unit. When sewage first enters this option, it is stopped in the trash tank where it settles and forms layers. The wastewater that is made up of the higher level is moved into a treatment tank that uses air bubbles to circulate the matter via an aerator.

This system uses bacteria that require oxygen to function, but they actually disintegrate waste more quickly than the conventional option. The last step includes disinfecting what is left in the pump tank with water and disinfectant.

An aerobic septic system is somewhat pricier due to energy costs and needs more maintenance than the conventional system. One main perk of the aerobic option is that it doesn't need as much space to drain the water thanks to the way it is treated inside the tank. If you have less land, this option can be beneficial.
