An effluent filter is a screened barrier located between the inside of a septic tank and the drain field. The filter's perforations allow water to filter through, while trapping solid waste. This helps protect the drain field and ensures cleaner, clearer effluent leaves the tank. But, over time, it's not uncommon for these filters to become clogged, which can reduce the efficiency of your septic system. Here are three signs that your filter is clogged and needs to be cleaned or replaced.

How to Tell If Your Septic Tank Filter Is Clogged

1. Wastewater Backups

When a filter is blocked, wastewater cannot move through it. This can cause the water to back up into your fixtures. You may see standing wastewater in tubs or sinks or a larger amount of water in your toilets. Backups are often accompanied by gurgling sounds near your fixtures.

2. Slow Drainage

In some cases, a filter won't be totally obstructed but blocked in certain areas by a buildup of solid deposits. When this occurs, wastewater won't flow through it as easily and smoothly as it should. This can lead to slowly draining water in your sinks, showers, and toilets. Ideally, wastewater should be eliminated from fixtures in a rush, not a trickle.

3. Drain Field Failure

A congested filter can cause your drain field to fail, usually in one of two ways. A blockage may force wastewater out of one of the service ports or covers, which results in wet areas around the tank itself. A clog might still allow a small amount of wastewater to get through, but not enough to keep the drain field sufficiently damp; this can produce a noticeably drier drain field.
