Your septic system will work smoothly as long as it's used and maintained properly. A severe clog can damage the system and create unpleasant backups in your home. The following items are common culprits that can put the system at risk.

What Clogs Septic Systems?

1. Shrubs & Trees

The waste in the septic system is full of nutrients. If there are trees or shrubs planted near the drain field or above the tank, the roots will grow toward the lines to get those nutrients.

They'll find any weak spots in the line and grow inside, breaking and clogging the pipe. Keep the area free of larger plants; instead, grow a simple grass lawn above the buried system. If you already have plants with extensive root systems near the septic components, consider relocating them or have an arborist keep track of their growth.

2. Toxic Cleaning Chemicals

The septic tank is full of helpful bacteria that break down solid waste. If you send harsh chemicals into the system, the substances will kill the bacteria and leave the tank full of solid waste that won't break down properly.

Avoid lye, drain cleaners, oven cleaners, and sodium hydroxide. Instead, use organic cleaning solutions for your sinks, tubs, and toilets.

3. Garbage Disposal Waste

The garbage disposal is a useful tool in the kitchen, but you shouldn't use it to handle all of your food waste. Scrape as much of the food as possible into the trash can or composting bin before washing the dishes.

Never use the disposal for grease, oils, or starches such as pasta and potato peelings. These thicken in the pipes and cause sticky clogs. Pour leftover cooking oil in a disposable container and throw it away.
