A storage unit provides a secure space to keep extra items that don't fit in your home. From clothing to furniture, units can house several items and keep them protected. Many people opt to keep electronics in a unit, since they tend to have more monetary value than other household goods. Consult the guide below to learn how to pack electronics to keep them pristine while they're in storage.

How to Store Electronics Safely

1. Back Up Your Data

It's wise to back up your data before moving electronics into a storage unit. This will keep your information secure and accessible in case the equipment is unexpectedly damaged. Create digital backups—cloud storage is ideal for this—of the files kept on your computers, smartphones and tablets, gaming consoles, and other devices.

2. Clean the Devices

Cleaning your devices will remove dirt and other fine particles that can scratch and damage screens and other sensitive components. It will also prevent dirt and dust from getting into the inner workings of the equipment. Wipe down the outside of the devices with a soft microfiber cloth or computer cleaning wipes prior to moving them into a storage unit.

3. Disconnect Wires & Other Attachments

Detaching wires, cords, and accessories will help you keep better track of the device components, avoid damaging tangles and snarls, and make storage easier and less cluttered and chaotic. Attach a label or piece of colored tape to each component so you know where they go when it comes time to reconnect everything.

4. Use Appropriate Packaging

If possible, store devices in their original packaging. If that's not an option, wrap them in antistatic foam and bubble wrap, place them in the strongest boxes you can find, and tape the flaps closed. Avoid putting plastic wrapping around electronics, as this can trap moisture and cause mold growth. Be mindful of how high the boxes are stacked. Don't pile them too high, as they run the risk of tipping over. Instead, create a few columns to prevent damage.
