Those unfamiliar with the world of wine may find the subject a little intimidating. With so many varieties and flavor profiles, beginners often feel overwhelmed during wine tastings or when making a selection at their favorite restaurant. Here's what you need to know about the differences between wines and what to look for when sampling them.

4 Types of Wine & What Makes Them Unique

1. Chardonnay

While white wines are known for their dryness, Chardonnay offers a much smoother, buttery feel on the palate. This white wine can be aged in oak barrels, which infuse it with toasted vanilla or caramel flavors. Unaged varieties will be more citrus-forward, with notes of lemons and apples. It pairs beautifully with seafood like lobster and crab, as well as meats like chicken and pork.

2. Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet sauvignon has the distinction of being one of the most popular red wine varieties. Its appeal has much to do with its rich flavor profiles and full-bodied texture. Notes of herbs and spices are common, but you may also detect the buoyant flavor of currant, depending on the age of the bottle. This should be paired with smoked meat, lamb, and cheddar.

3. Riesling

Riesling is a versatile German white wine that can be extremely dry or intensely sweet, depending on how long grape sugars are allowed to ferment. Along with its strong citrus flavors, it can also contain aromatic floral and herbal notes. In terms of texture, Riesling tends to be much lighter-bodied than other whites and pairs well with duck and turkey, as well as spicy Indian and Thai cuisine.

4. Pinot Noir

If you're looking for a red wine that's not quite as intense, pinot noir is the way to go. Its light body and smooth finish make it eminently drinkable while still retaining the dryness that reds are notable for. You'll detect fruity notes reminiscent of cherries, as well as a heady floral aroma that recalls fresh-cut roses. Pinot noir is best paired with meats like chicken and pork and soft cheeses with nutty flavor notes.
