When eventually meeting friends at your favorite wine and beer cafe, you’ll have the opportunity to try a variety of beverages. Craft beers are available from various breweries using a wide range of flavors and brewing methods. If you’re wondering what differentiates a lager from a pilsner, here’s some basic information to review.

Understanding Craft Beers

Lager

Lager is one of the two main beer types, alongside ale. Ale uses top-fermenting yeast at warmer temperatures to create a beer that’s fruity, sweet, and full-bodied. Lager differs from ale because it uses bottom-fermenting yeasts.

With the fermentation process taking place at the bottom of the container and at cooler temperatures, the flavor is crisp and clean with fewer fruit characteristics. Many of the most popular beers, such as Heineken®, Pabst Blue Ribbon®, and Budweiser®, are lagers.

Pilsner

craft beerA pilsner is a light type of lager that originated in the Czech Republic and is known for its pale coloring and spicy flavor. This type of beer was first brewed in 1842 in the Czech town of Pilsen.

The original brewer, Josef Groll, used Saaz hops to prevent the beer from becoming spoiled. The result was a spicy, palate-cleansing beer that’s golden and occasionally light straw in color.

Thanks to their thirst-quenching and refreshing flavor, pilsners have become some of the most popular beers around the globe. They’re also the inspiration for American pale ales, German pilsners, and even Italian pilsners like Peroni®.
