It's important to visit your gynecologist so that you can ask crucial questions about your reproductive and sexual health. If you have an appointment scheduled, it’s normal to feel a little apprehensive. The following guide can help you consider a few useful questions.

What Should You Ask Your Gynecologist?

What signs indicate poor vaginal health?

Sudden changes in vaginal discharge can indicate a health issue. However, discharge amounts differ among women. Severe secretions, color changes, and odors can signal yeast infections, sexually-transmitted diseases, and pelvic inflammatory disease

You should also watch for signs of vaginal itchiness and bleeding, painful sex, vaginal masses, and bleeding between periods. An OB-GYN specialist will let you know what’s causing any vaginal changes. Some could be caused by hormone level fluctuations or new birth control.

Does birth control regulate menstruation?

Hormonal birth control options often provide period regulation, clearer skin, and menstrual cramp relief. Some patches deliver estrogen and progestin directly into the bloodstream to assist regulation. Others, such as an intrauterine device placed directly in the uterus, can sometimes cause period irregularities in the first months of use.

When do I need a PAP smear?

A PAP smear checks for vaginal inflammation and cervix abnormalities caused by HPV and cervical cancer. Women under age 21 do not need PAP tests. Women between 21 and 65 should schedule them every three years, and they should have HPV tests every five years. However, if you do have HPV, you should schedule PAP screenings every three years

Are my PMS symptoms normal?

Women experience various symptoms before menstruation that are completely normal. These include bloating, headaches, irritability, acne, and constipation. If PMS symptoms persist or worsen, ask your gynecologist if they can determine a testing and treatment course.
